Creating a timeless interior using natural fibres with Claire from Luumo Design

Posted: 11 June 2019

Luumo Design is one of Australia’s leading Scandinavian and Nordic design stores offering a carefully curated range of contemporary furniture, lighting and homewares including Weave cushions and rugs.

We had the pleasure to talk to one of the Directors, Claire, about the Scandinavian trend of using natural fibres in the home. Claire has shared with us some insight into the practical benefits of natural fibre rugs as well as tips on how you can style them to create a timeless interior.

Luumo's roots are firmly in Scandinavian design. What role do natural fibres play in this distinctive style?

Scandinavian design is inspired by nature, so natural fibres such as wood, wool and sheepskin are vital to creating a cosy and inviting home.

These natural fibres can be layered together, creating more texture and depth to the room. With a chunky wool rug, some beautiful cushions and an easy on the eye colour palette you can make a home feel very hygge.

What tips do you have for creating a timeless interior using natural fibres?

Tip 1 | Keep it neutral

Scandinavian Styling Tip Neutrals

Create a timeless look by keeping the interior neutral, as it will always be in style – you can add a splash of colour with cushions and artwork. Cushions are a great and affordable way to change the look of the home.

Tip 2 | Invest in quality furniture

Scandinavian Styling Tip Wooden Furniture

Buy good quality wooden furniture, which will stand the test of time. Gubi and Ercol are great timeless brands. I am an advocate for “buying once and buying well”. Choose furniture with simple lines that is well made and you’ll enjoy looking at it in the home for years to come.

Tip 3 | No room is complete without a rug

Scandinavian Styling Tip Rugs

Invest in a good quality rug – rugs really do make a room. In my opinion every room needs a rug to make a house feel homely.

Functionality is of utmost importance to Scandinavians, and their homes are a testament to this, built using honest materials and featuring quality craftsmanship. What practical benefits do natural fibre rugs give?

Natural fibre rugs are hard wearing and great for high traffic areas. They are easier to clean than viscose and create the texture that a room needs.

What advice to you have for choosing a rug made from natural fibres? Are there any specific materials that you favour over others?

Personally, I love a chunky wool rug in the bedroom, so it feels great under the foot when you wake.

For my family and having two young children, I love the flatter Weave Logan and Jimara for our living areas. They have that beautiful weave and create a textural look, whilst being great low maintenance rugs.

Which Weave rug is your favourite at the moment and which Luumo products would you pair it with to complete the look?

My favourite Weave rug is the Emerson. I love the chunky weave and the fact is comes in the cream and grey options, I have this in my bedroom along with the In The Sac linen in clay and graphite.

I’m also a big fan of the Makaulu with the geometric patterns - I think this is a great option to the traditional beni rugs as it is more modern. I think this would look great with our Globewest Vittoria Slip sofa in Milk and Menu turning table in Oak.

I also love the Logan in Pigment which is a great weave and colour! It is super versatile and suits lots of different interiors, team this with the Joni chair in Nude and you have a very stylish interior.

Thanks Claire for sharing your insight with us. If you are looking for some beautiful Scandinavian products for your home, be sure to check out Luumo Design online or at their store in Paddington, Sydney.
